“It always appeals to me as an early Victorian sort of crag, with a home-made atmosphere about its unshapely formation. … I close my eyes and I see, entering and issuing from the gloom of the gullies, strong and rigid men of nails, adorned with side whiskers and wearing deer-stalker caps, with their quaint peaks fore and aft. Undoubtedly these early pioneers of our craft left their marks on the rocks in more senses than one, and when I visit ‘Pavey’ I am reminded of their fortitude and the high respect they had for the sport they bequeathed to our care”
